1) Did you reset the motor TDC exhaust as well for that valve?
2) Are you sure the valve adjuster itself did not walk when you were torquing down jam nut?
3) .003 is too tight according to the dealer I bought my Savage from in Mississippi. He says they set them at .005, not .003 to get better service from the top end.
4) Did you notice anything unusual in the head while you were adjusting the valves, like a bad cam or worn rockers, etc.
5) You wiggle the actual rocker arms, not the wrench on the motor. Of course the motor is going to have some play.

Last and finally, a Clymer manual has the same technical value as the automotive Chilton series, ie, NONE.
